Welcome to the Crochet Ciúin (Quiet Crochet) Blog

Crochet Ciúin

Updated: Aug 2, 2024

Ciúin means quiet as Gaeilge (in Irish), and the peace of mind that crochet has given me is reflected in the name 'Crochet Ciúin'.

Initially, I started an Instagram account to document my crochet learning journey, however quite quickly I started seeing this thing called "Irish Crochet" being mentioned in the online crochet community. Of course, being Irish, it peaked my interest...

Recently, while on vacation in Italy (and regretting that I hadn't brought my hook & yarn with me) I decided to explore the history of Irish Crochet. Something lit up within my soul almost immediately. I found a free copy online of a book called "PRISCILLA Irish Crochet Book" (1912), I downloaded it and quickly ordered some tiny hooks and thread so that I could begin my practice as soon as I got home.

Irish Crochet has a connection to Ireland's Great Famine and Irish women, and this is something I will write more about soon. Learning about Irish Crochet Lace has ignited a passion within me, and I can't believe that I had never heard about this heritage craft before. But that quote feels more true to me than ever "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear".

It has quickly become evident to me that I will commit myself to helping to revive Irish Crochet Lace in Ireland and further afield for the rest of my life.
